Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet
The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
