Shifting from Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained little new information.
