The Formula for an Ideal Kip: Timing, Location and Duration?
Listen to enough productivity podcasters, making it tempting to think that a nap is a powerful tool: rather than a sticking plaster following restless night, but a route towards improved recall, a brighter outlook and possibly improved athletic performance. Elite athletes are all at it – along with concert pianists, fighters & media moguls. But if you lack a special sleep space or employment that permits frequent naps, can there *honestly* sufficient advantages to a burst of shut-eye to merit the kerfuffle? Does there exist a dependable method to nod off promptly? Plus, is it possible to really guarantee you will arise feeling refreshed, rather than worse?
Understanding The Drive to Snooze
“There are three key drivers for napping among most adults,” says a professor of circadian rhythm researcher. “One is what we call compensatory napping, that is what you do following insufficient sleep the night before. Another is pre-emptive sleep, where you are preparing for sleep loss in the future, for instance if you’re working on night shifts. The third is called “hedonic napping”, which essentially is about the wish: you get a moment to doze in the afternoon, and it feels nice to do it.”
The initial step to undertake, so, is to examine your nap motivation. “Daytime sleep can be genuinely useful when nighttime sleep gets interrupted for reasons beyond your control – for instance, when you are caring for an infant, or if you are healing from sickness or intense exercise,” states a sleep specialist. “Yet when you take a nap as your nighttime sleep feels fragile or broken, that can be an indicator your need for sleep is not at the level required. Under those circumstances, daytime sleep can turn into part of the problem, instead of the fix. Employ naps for brief periods to address immediate needs – the priority must always be a solid and consistent overnight rest.”
The Ideal Nap Length
This means that naps shouldn’t be too extended to interfere with your sleep at night, and best are not recommended post-3 p.m. (contingent on the time you go to bed in the evening). How long is sensible? Advice differs. From the most referenced research about napping, researchers at Nasa discovered that space travelers had improvements of over 50% in alertness and a 34% increase in cognitive performance after a 26-minute nap (in detail, this included a six-minute long falling asleep phase). “I recommend using an alarm for half an hour or less – the majority are asleep within 10 minutes,” explains a specialist. “There’s a lot of guidance out there about the ideal number of time, but that tends to lead individuals to become more anxious than anything – and the most counterproductive thing one can do while aiming to nod off is to stress over it.”
If you’re going to take an extended nap, bypass the 45-60 minute window that encourages that sluggish feeling, that foggy state when you wake. “Research suggests it's more effective to take a lengthier snooze lasting 60-90 minutes than a medium-length one,” says the expert. “Forty-five minutes is sufficient to plunge you into a deep sleep stage and you’re more likely to feel disoriented upon awakening – however, if you take it a little longer to a full sleep cycle, it's likely you'll to be on the end a natural sleep cycle and will probably wake up feeling more alert. Though if you’re sleeping for a long period, it will affect your sleep that night.”
Finding an Ideal Sleep Space
When it comes to precise methods, advice differs. A few professionals suggest using comparable habits one would use to foster quality nighttime sleep: a quiet room, a cozy bed and minimal light as is feasible. Others suggest that one could just doze on the sofa in whatever light happens to be around – to prevent post-nap grogginess and to maintain your sleeping quarters as the environment your mind associates with proper sleep. “Sleep is something really tricky to will,” says a specialist. “Lacking any drowsiness, it becomes harder to recline and basically tell yourself to fall asleep. There’s got to be some sleep pressure available to bring the sleep on initially. Personally, I can often nap in full light and wake up naturally alarm-free, though, what aids most folks is to wait for an instance when they are naturally feeling a bit drowsy and calmly ease into sleep.”
Experimentation is key, and should you have few options – for example, if you’re trying to grab some shut-eye while traveling or at the office – there’s nothing wrong to employ a few tools. “In my work with footballers, I advise that they avoid becoming accustomed to sleeping in their bed, because they’re going to have|they will
